Groundbreaking Held For Katie’s Pool

A talented swimmer and Family Y volunteer will soon have a special-needs pool built and named in her memory. 20-year old Katie York died last May after falling ill with viral encephalitis, when she was 17. She had been a competitive swimmer, but after she got sick, she made it her mission to help others with disabilities swim and benefit from pool time.

Search Continues For Teen Swimmer At Myrtle Beach

Authorities are still searching for a 16-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming at Myrtle Beach. Capt. David Knipes of the Myrtle Beach Police Department said Monday that the whole department remains on the lookout. The teenager from Conway was about 50 yards out in the water Sunday when one of his friends heard him call for help before disappearing. Authorities declined to release the boy’s name because he is a juvenile.

Michael Phelps’ coach says he is sure the swimmer will learn from his latest controversy, and is glad to have him back in training. Coach Bob Bowman issued the statement Sunday after a British tabloid published a photograph showing the Olympic gold medalist inhaling from a marijuana pipe in November at the University of South Carolina, in Columbia. The coach did not respond to phone and e-mail messages and issued the short statement through Phelps’ agent.
