Georgia DOT Suspends Roadwork For Sales Tax Holiday
Shoppers will get a break from road construction this weekend to go along with the state’s suspension of the sales tax for school supplies, clothing and computer equipment. The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend construction-related lane closures within five miles of a shopping mall or major shopping district on all interstates and major state routes beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, July 31 through 9 p.m. Sunday, August 2.

The president of a South Carolina technical college has been suspended after an audit. ‘The Times and Democrat’ of Orangeburg reported Tuesday that Denmark Technical College President Dr. John K. Waddell has been suspended without pay.

Michael Vick has arrived at a federal courthouse in Virginia to meet with his probation officer. The suspended NFL star’s visit Friday to the Norfolk courthouse is his first known appearance in public since he left a federal penitentiary in Kansas early Wednesday morning. He began serving two months of home confinement in Hampton on Thursday.

The owner of the Atlanta Falcons says Michael Vick has paid his debt to society and merits a second chance. Arthur Blank, who once gave Vick a $130 million contract, said at the NFL owners’ meeting in South Florida that the suspended quarterback is taking positive steps by wanting to work with humane societies and making other changes in his life.

Student Sent Home For Refusing To Remove Flu Mask
A seventh-grader who wore a mask that had been given to him by his mother to guard against swine flu was sent home from from school after he refused to remove it. Newton County school system spokeswoman Sherri Viniard says the 13-year-old created a disturbance when he arrived with the mask on Thursday and rumors began to spread that he had the virus.

Seven SC Officers Worked Without Driver’s License
South Carolina Public Safety director Mark Keel says seven officers have been suspended for working while their driver’s licenses were suspended. The State reported the agency investigated after the newspaper filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the driving records for Senior Trooper John McGaha and reported his license had been suspended.

Burnettetown authorities say two 10-year-olds are in trouble, after being caught with pot in school. Police say two Jefferson Elementary Students were passing small bags of marijuana back and forth.
