Nuclear materials are not new at SRS, but the idea that high-level waste could be housed there, permanently, is now getting the attention of a group of local activists. This group is concerned, because the place this waste, was to be shipped, might be shutting down? The government is looking to halt construction at Yucca Mountain, in the Nevada desert. It’s hard to believe it’s been six months since a tornado touched down and destroyed businesses and homes in Beech Island. The storm hit during a time when many were struggling with the economic disaster. One small business almost had to shut its doors, but after the debris was picked up from their shop, and the economy picked up speed through stimulus funds, the family business is still standing. Three SRNS employees were transported via ambulance to Doctors Hospital in Augusta after exposure to nitric acid during a work activity at approximately 7:44 a.m., Tuesday morning. UPDATE: WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that two of the workers have been treated and released from Doctors Hospital, and the third is still being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Federal officials say construction of a facility to process plutonium waste at a former nuclear bomb plant in South Carolina is on time and within budget.

A former nuclear weapons complex along the South Carolina-Georgia border is opening its doors to the public. The Savannah River Site says a pilot tour program in April was so successful that it will offer another round of public tours, starting in September.

The U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health and Environmental Control are holding a public workshop on Tuesday in North Augusta to discuss plans for shuttered nuclear reactors at the Savannah River Site.

An Ohio company has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract to build a facility to process plutonium waste at a former nuclear bomb plant in South Carolina.

Savannah River Remediation (SRR), formerly Washington Savannah River Company (WSRC), employees have processed over one million gallons of hazardous waste in the last six months, mostly from the Site’s underground waste storage tanks, at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) Saltstone facility.

Tuesday, the Savannah River Site (SRS) held its third of four job fairs, at Aiken Technical College. They saw more than 3,000 applicants come in for orientation and employment opportunities.
