SC Lawmakers Passed Up Getting Millions More for Unemployment Benefits

South Carolina lawmakers got a lot of attention two weeks ago when they went back to Columbia just to change a law to qualify the state for about $40 million from Washington to extend unemployment benefits. But what didn’t get attention was the fact that they could have gotten even more, a total of about $100 million, but passed on the opportunity. SC Governor Mark Sanford Signs Unemployment Benefits Extension

According to a press release from Governor Mark Sanford’s office, the Governor signed, on Thursday, into law Senate bill 374, which extends benefits to the unemployed under the stimulus act. The bill passed with unanimous, bipartisan support and was made necessary by an oversight at the South Carolina Employment Security Commission (ESC).

Assistant SC Attorney General Resigns After Being Caught With Stripper

A former SC state lawmaker resigns from the state prosecutors office! Authorities say 66-year-old Roland Corning was stopped Monday, after officers spotted his car in an area known for sex! Police say he was with a stripper, and they found Viagra, and sex toys…It happened near the Elmwood Cemetery, in downtown Columbia. WJBF News Channel 6’s SC Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, tells us what happened, and why Corning was released without being charged with any crime.

SC Lawmakers Meet For Special Session

Thousands of South Carolinians who are out of work should have their unemployment benefits extended soon, after action Tuesday by state lawmakers. Lawmakers are back in Columbia for what they hope will be a two-day session, to change state law to qualify for federal money to extend unemployment benefits. About 7,000 people had their benefits run out, last week, because the state had not made the change. State Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter sponsored a bill back in April that would have done it…but it didn’t pass. WJBF News Channel 6’s SC Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, has more.

South Carolina lawmakers will not consider a move to impeach Republican Gov. Mark Sanford anytime soon.

SC State Lawmakers Return To Columbia For Special Session

State lawmakers are back in Columbia, on Tuesday, to fix an oversight that is keeping the state from extending unemployment benefits. Lawmakers needed to change a state law, to make the state eligible for extra stimulus money from Washington, to extend those benefits. One state lawmaker also plans to introduce an impeachment resolution against Governor Mark Sanford. That’s expected to be sent to a committee,with no further action Tuesday.

SC Governor Sanford Impeachment Resolution Likely Next Week

State lawmakers will be going back to Columbia next Tuesday to change a law so unemployed workers in the state can receive 7 more weeks of extended unemployment benefits. While they’re back in session, Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester, says he’ll introduce a resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against Gov. Mark Sanford. Hearing Held At S.C. Supreme Court Over Governor Sanford’s Ethics Investigation

Governor Mark Sanford went to the South Carolina Supreme Court Monday…trying to block the South Carolina Ethics Commission from giving its report on him to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He says that investigative report will not have his side, and the House is likely to use it to impeach him. SC Misses Federal Aid For The Unemployed

Thousands of South Carolina’s unemployed will miss out on additional benefits after state officials failed to take the steps necessary to secure them. Unemployed residents could have received an additional seven weeks of emergency benefits, from federal stimulus money, if lawmakers had passed a law to temporarily change the index used to count the number of people out of work. Sixty South Carolina House Republicans are asking embattled Gov. Mark Sanford to resign. A letter from the lawmakers asking the GOP governor to leave office was delivered to Sanford shortly after noon Wednesday. South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell says he wants Gov. Mark Sanford to resign. Harrell on Tuesday sent the governor a letter asking him to step down from office because of “constant distractions” Sanford has brought.

A key South Carolina legislator says he expects a move to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford will have traction when the legislative session begins next year. GOP House Judiciary Chairman Jim Harrison told a convention of the state’s judges Thursday that a bill to force out the Republican governor could have the support to be passed from his committee to the House floor. Unemployment Insurance Tax Could More Than Double for South Carolina Businesses

South Carolina’s 12.1 percent unemployment rate, third-highest in the country, could start affecting you next year even if you’re not unemployed. State officials say it’s likely the state will have to raise the unemployment insurance tax that businesses pay, which pays the benefits for people who lose their jobs.
