Gov. Mark Sanford says a new $6 million security system at the Statehouse is a “colossal waste” and has ordered state police away from some checkpoints.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry says security is being tightened in Baghdad following bombings that have killed at least 20 people. A government statement says the added security will include more undercover agents on the streets.

Fulton County deputies have emptied the courtroom used to hold the trial of courthouse gunman Brian Nichols. The officers emptied the courtroom Tuesday morning and used security dogs to sweep the courtroom and most of the sixth floor of the Atlanta Municipal Courthouse. Court spokesman Don Plummer said there was a “security issue” but did not elaborate.
