President Obama’s Plan To Make Kids Attend School Longer Gets Cool Reaction

A plan to make kids go to school longer is getting a cool reception from some students and parents. President Obama and his Education Secretary are pushing a plan to shorten summer vacation and lengthen the school day…all to make American kids more competitive with kids around the world. Aiken County students went back to school on Monday…to a few changes in the classroom. There are additional bottles of hand sanitizer around school, and there’s extra attention focused on hand-washing. District officials say one thing not ‘welcome back to school’ is the Swine Flu. Thursday is the National Day Of Prayer, and there were services all over the country to mark it, including aprayer rally at Curtis Baptist Church, Thursday morning. Students in grades 2 through 12 of the school participated, but it’s not just a one-day thing at Curtis Baptist.

SC School Featured By President Obama Gets Facelift

Students at a rural South Carolina middle school whose shoddy condition was highlighted in a speech by President Barack Obama have a spiffed up cafeteria and new classroom furniture. Students arriving at J.V. Martin Junior High in Dillon on Monday said the new desks, chairs and tables and a revamped cafeteria show that people care about them.

Columbine: Victims Still Coping…10 Years Later

In Colorado, many remembered the second worst school shooting in U.S. history, on Monday. It was 10 years ago, Monday, that two teenage gunmen carried out a methodical massacre at Columbine High School, in Littleton, Colorado. They murdered thirteen, before killing themselves. Though the pain may always remain, survivors are hoping to make this anniversary a turning point. ABC News’ Paula Haddock is in Littleton, Colorado with more on the big story.
