Officials at the University of South Carolina are warning residents near the Columbia campus of a possible fundraising scam. The university has gotten several calls from the public, reporting that college-aged people claiming to be students are going door-to-door to raise money.

According to Captain Steve Morris, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help from the public in identifying two “flim flam” suspects.

Everyone is trying to get their hands on some stimulus money. But financial excepts warn about some possible scams and unnecessary steps to get that government money. Our Fraendy Clervaud has the story.

It’s sometimes called a “crash for cash” - a type of insurance fraud in which a car accident is staged or caused on purpose to get a payout from your insurance company. Scammers have recently targeted the Midlands and Lowcountry, trying to trick consumers out of their financial information, the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs warns.

Thanks to a WJBF News Channel 6 viewer in Thomson, we’ve got a scam alert to warn you about. The scam starts with a phone call. The caller says you’ve won a lottery…thousands of dollars. In order to get the money, however, you’re told to send a check to them for processing.

Don’t fall for the bait. The Consumer Federation of America is warning people about fake check scams which lure people to believe they won something, but need to wire back money for taxes or administrative fees.

A 70-year-old Graniteville woman is accused of stealing from a victim of the Graniteville train accident. Aiken County Investigators say Minni Lee Jeff stole money from a victim’s settlement check. Her family says those claims are outrageous…but investigators want to know why $100,000 dollars is missing. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is warning you about stimulus scams hitting the state, where scammers are using the federal stimulus package as a way to steal people’s money and personal information. WJBF News Channel 6’s Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, has more.

A complaint has been filed inside a California civil court against Baltimore Ravens cornerback Anwar Phillips. In the complaint, both Phillips and a pastor, who has yet to be named, are accused of of preying on San Diego homeowners facing foreclosure. An attorney representing the homeowners say the pair organized a scheme involving the transfer of home titles to so-called rescuers, who then took out a new mortgage and pocketed the equity.
