Blood Still Needed:  One Year After Sugar Refinery Blast

It has been one year since the Imperial Sugar refinery blast, in Savannah. Many of the people injured in the explosion were treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, at Doctors Hospital, in Augusta. It’s a place that depends on local blood donations, and Saturday there was a special effort to recruit new donors. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.

Imperial Sugar Resumes Refining Sugar After Blast

Imperial Sugar’s coastal Georgia plant is operating again for the first time since a February explosion killed 14 people and injured dozens more. Company CEO John Sheptor said Wednesday the refinery in Port Wentworth resumed producing liquid sugar earlier this month and on Thursday will receive its first shipment of raw sugar since the explosion nearly 10 months ago.

Paula Deen Lends Name To 6-State Blood Drive

Southern cooking queen Paula Deen of Savannah, Ga., is lending her name to an American Red Cross blood drive during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

Saxby Chambliss Fights Subpoena In Imperial Sugar Suit

Sen. Saxby Chambliss is fighting a subpoena by a Savannah attorney who’s suing Imperial Sugar on behalf of victims of the deadly February explosion at its Georgia refinery. Chambliss spokeswoman Michelle Hitt Grasso says federal law and Senate rules make the Republican senator immune from giving a deposition in the case.

Pregnant Woman Found Dead in Burke County, Suspect Arrested

It’s a shocking find for Burke County investigators. The body of a Hispanic woman was found in an open field in Waynesboro over the weekend. The body was found along Chappell Road just East of Georgia Highway 56 south of Waynesboro. Count on Fraendy Clervaud he has the story.

Convicted Georgia Police Killer Granted Stay Of Execution

Convicted cop killer, Troy Davis, has been granted a stay of execution. The stay was granted late Tuesday afternoon. Davis was convicted of killing a Savannah police officer in 1989.
