A state lawmaker who supports merging several historically black public colleges in Georgia has introduced a resolution urging the Board of Regents to move ahead with the cost-saving move.

Public colleges created during the segregation era to provide blacks with an education are at the center of a budget battle in Georgia.

A 19-year-old Savannah State University student says he fired in self defense when he shot and wounded a fellow student on campus last month.

A student has been wounded in a shooting at a residence hall at Savannah State University.  University spokeswoman Loretta Heyward says the shooting happened between 11 a.m. and noon Friday at the historically black college on Savannah’s south side. She says campus officials don’t know whether the shooter has been apprehended or whether another student was involved in the shooting.
