UPDATED: Election Results

For Augusta commission District 1, a runoff will be scheduled between Matt Aitken and William Fennoy.  They were the top vote getters Tuesday night.  For District 3, Joe Bowles is the winner.  In District 5, William Lockett edges out former commissioner Bobby Hankerson.  And in District 9, it’s a solid win for J.R. Hatney with just over 98 percent of the vote.  On the school board side, Patsy Scott will take over for her late husband, longtime educator and board member Joe Scott.  Steve Smith wins re-election as Marshal.

Turnout Expected To Be Tiny For Augusta Election

Tuesday is Election Day, in the Garden City, but Election Officials say the big winner appears to be apathy. Even with three contested Commission races on the ballot, turnout will struggle to top ten percent. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.

Richmond County BOE Looks At Saggy Pants Policy At School Events

The pants get pulled up, or you get kicked out. Tuesday night, a new policy was discussed at the Richmond County Board of Education Committee meeting. School Board Discusses Richmond County Furlough Days

It’s the “F” word no one wants to hear…Furloughs. Some staff and bus drivers are already seeing their furlough days coming from their paycheck, but no decision was every made on when they could take their furlough days, until Monday evening. Sex Offender Targets Butler High School Student

A registered sex offender was arrested after exposing himself to a Butler High School student, early Friday morning. Parents are outraged, because by law, the man accused, should have never been around the school to begin with. But, this case serves as a warning to all parents, especially for those whose children walk to school by themselves. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop reports.

Goshen Neighbors Go Before Commissioners About Grant Money

Some Commissioners say it was a mistake for Augusta officials to apply for a $50 million stimulus loan for housing, without consulting them beforehand. The mayor signed off on the grant, saying the city was facing a deadline, and if he did not take action, the city would have had no chance to receive the funds. The Village at Goshen is one of those areas who could receive the low income housing money. Tuesday night, it was there turn to go before Commissioners and let them know what they thought of the whole thing. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.

Richmond County Still Working on School Bus Issues

Parents say they’re concerned their children are riding overcrowded buses, in many cases standing on the bus to and from school. The district says they’re working to correct transportation issues. WJBF News Channel 6’s Paige Tucker reports.
