CDC: Tainted Ground Beef May Be Linked To 2 Deaths
Contaminated fresh ground beef caused a possible E. coli outbreak that killed two people and sent 16 others to hospitals, federal health officials said Monday. Twenty-eight people may have become ill after eating beef produced by Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. All but three of the suspected infections are in the northeastern U.S. and 18 are in New England, said CDC spokeswoman Lola Scott Russell.

Nine Deaths Linked To Robes; Recall Expanded
Full-length women’s chenille robes made in Pakistan are being recalled by a Warren, Pa. company because they are highly flammable and now linked to nine deaths. Most of the deaths linked to the full-length chenille robes occurred when the victims were cooking. The victims were mostly in their 70s and 80s.

A Salinas Valley distributor is recalling two brands of bunched spinach after routine testing detected salmonella. The California Department of Public Health announced Thursday that Ippolito International is recalling 1,715 cartons of spinach harvested from Sept. 1-3, and sold to retail, foodservice and wholesale buyers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says about a million play yards are being recalled because of a falling hazard. The play yards are distributed by Kolcraft Enterprises of Chicago. They were manufactured in China, Spain and Italy and sold under the brand names Kolcraft, Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle.
