Team: Philadelphia Phillies Announcer Harry Kalas Dead

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas has died at age 73. Team president David Montgomery announced the death Monday a short time after Kalas passed out in the broadcast booth before a game in Washington against the Nationals.

World Series: Phillies 4, Rays 3; Phillies Win Series 4-1

The Philadelphia Phillies have captured the World Series after winning the decisive fifth game 4-3 over Tampa Bay in a clinching game that took two days to complete following Monday night’s rain delay.

The World Series won’t resume until Wednesday night at the earliest. With rain still falling in Philadelphia, Major League Baseball decided not to attempt to complete Game 5 Tuesday night.

Las Vegas sports books favor the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies and would owe huge payouts if the American League champions prevail. Oddsmakers say enough bettors took the Rays early in the year at long-shot prices to force books to adjust lines to encourage bets on the Phillies.

Matt Stairs and Shane Victorino hit two-run home runs in the eight inning to lead Philadelphia to a 7-5 win over the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. The power display gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series and put them a win away from their first World Series since 1993.

Pitchers Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians and Brad Lidge of the Philadelphia Phillies have been honored as Major League Baseball’s Comeback Players of the Year. The winners of the annual award were announced Tuesday.
