12 New Swine Flu Cases Reported In SC

South Carolina health officials say 12 new cases of swine flu have been reported, bringing the state’s total to 29. The Department of Health and Environmental Control said Thursday that cases are now reported in nine counties and 24 of the 29 people infected with the virus were linked to a private school in Newberry from which students made a trip to Mexico last month.

Some SC Schools Remain Closed From Flu Outbreak

The private South Carolina school where the state’s first swine flu cases were confirmed is reopening, even as public schools in the area remain closed. Newberry Academy reopened Monday, after being closed all last week because students who had been in Mexico on a trip last month became ill. Newberry County public schools closed Friday and remained closed Monday because of the outbreak.

Federal health officials say there are 10 confirmed cases of swine flu in South Carolina. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that South Carolina’s cases bring the national total to more than 100 confirmed cases of the virus. Ten other states also have confirmed cases. South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control now confirms 13 cases and says 6 other cases are “probable.“

WHO Raises Pandemic Flu Alert Level To Phase 5

The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the second highest level, meaning that it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent. WHO says the phase 5 alert means there is sustained human to human spread in at least two countries. It also signals that efforts to produce a vaccine will be ramped up.

Even the mighty Wolverine is taking precautions when it comes to swine flu. Film distributor 20th Century Fox says it has canceled actor Hugh Jackman’s scheduled appearance in Mexico City to promote “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.“

Cuba Suspends Mexico Flights On Swine Flu Concern

Cuba is suspending flights to and from Mexico as a precaution against the spread of swine flu. The 48-hours suspension makes Cuba the first country to halt air travel with Mexico, where more than 150 deaths are believed to be caused by swine flu.

South Carolina health officials say they have identified two probable cases of swine flu in the state and a private school headmaster says those are linked to a student trip to Mexico. In South Carolina, the headmaster of Newberry Academy decided to close the entire school Monday…after DHEC recommended it. While some of the seniors who had gone to Mexico on a trip were sick when they got home…others didn’t start showing symptoms for several days. That means they had been back at school. WJBF News Channel 6’s Robert Kittle has more.
