SC Misses Federal Aid For The Unemployed

Thousands of South Carolina’s unemployed will miss out on additional benefits after state officials failed to take the steps necessary to secure them. Unemployed residents could have received an additional seven weeks of emergency benefits, from federal stimulus money, if lawmakers had passed a law to temporarily change the index used to count the number of people out of work. SC Governor Sanford Files Lawsuit To Stop Stimulus Spending

Gov. Mark Sanford announced details of his federal lawsuit against the state legislature Thursday morning. It names Attorney General Henry McMaster as the defendant, as the chief enforcer of South Carolina laws. The suit says the Republican governor has sole authority to request nearly $700 million in federal bailout money intended to keep the state from cutting education spending. 30-Day Age Limit For Nebraska Safe-Haven Law Advances

A 30-day age limit in the Nebraska safe-haven law appears headed for final approval. The state Legislature voted 41-6 Wednesday to give second-round approval to the limit. A final vote is expected on Friday and then the bill will go to Gov. Dave Heineman. He has said he would support a 30-day age limit.

South Carolina To Have Tax Free Holiday For Gun Sales

Most people are probably unaware of it, but on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, handguns, rifles and shotguns will be sales tax free in South Carolina. State lawmakers passed a bill in June that includes the sales tax holiday on firearms. They called it the Second Amendment Recognition Act. SC Governor: No Legislature Pay For Fixing Budget

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says legislators shouldn’t be paid when they return to Columbia to patch the state’s budget. Sanford said Wednesday he’s been telling legislators for five years that the state’s budget would be wrecked in the next economic downturn.
