Golfers Slice Up Proposal To Close “The Patch”

Facing a multi-million dollar budget shortfall not only has Augusta bean counters looking at raising taxes but also cutting services. One possible victim is the Augusta Municipal Golf Course. The American Cancer Society says it has cut 140 jobs nationwide, including about 80 in Atlanta where the organization is based.

Millen Plant Leaving Could Mean Devastation For City

Some jobs are hanging by a thread in a local community. One of the oldest continuously run mobile home factories could be closing. All of this is happening at Cavalier Homes in Millen, Georgia. That’s in Jenkins County. The plant is being bought out, and now some heavy rumors are spreading that it could be closing its doors on the more than 100 who work there. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop picks up the story.

Cuts At SC Department Of Consumer Affairs Will Slow Response To Residents’ Complaints

It was a busy day at the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs Thursday. The agency sponsored a “shred day”, when consumers could bring in any personal documents they had and get them shredded for free. WJBF News Channel 6’s SC Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, has more on how the cuts will affect SC residents’ complaints.

School Budget Cuts… Here We Go Again

It’s a tough decision for local educators as they deal with more state budget cuts. Georgia sales tax collections are down and the state is sending less money to public schools and universities. Augusta Richmond County Superintendent Doctor Dana Bedden says despite this new cut, he was able keep jobs and not lay anyone off. This time he was able to get $4.4 million from the reserves. But, he says those days may soon be over. Count on WJBF News Channel 6’s Fraendy Clervaud for the story.

Wrens Plant Closing, Newspaper Reports

According to our newspaper partner, the “News and Farmer,“ jobs will soon be lost in Wrens, Georgia. Mestek, Inc., the paper reports, is closing its plant on August 1st. Just under 100 people will be out of work.

Athens Regional Hospital Eyeing Layoffs, Pay Cuts

Athens Regional Medical Center officials are considering layoffs, pay cuts and health insurance increases to carve $14 million from the hospital’s spending.

Augusta State, MCG Eye Furloughs, Layoffs

Furloughs and layoffs are likely at the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta State University to help cope with further state budget cuts. MCG has issued a response regarding the situation.

Kennametal Announces Layoff Of All Its Columbia County Employees

WJBF News Channel 6 has received word of more layoffs in Columbia County. Kennametal has notified the Columbia County Commission that they are terminating all 153 employees at their plant, on Old Evans Road. The layoffs are effective August 30th.
