Circuit Court Judge Larry Hyman sentenced Rodell Vereen, 50, to 5 years in prison, suspended to 3 years in prison and 2 years probation.

Hospital: USC Equestrian Team Member Improving After Horse Spill
A 20-year-old collegian who suffered a life-threatening head injury at a Vermont horse show is showing signs of improvement in an Albany, New York, hospital. Victoria Middleton, of Marietta, Georgia, was hurt Friday at the Vermont Summer Festival horse show in East Dorset when her horse got spooked and Middleton was knocked to the ground.

A Longs man is in jail after Horry County police say he was caught on surveillance cameras having sex with a horse. According to a police report, Rodell Vereen 50, was arrested for the second time in three years for buggery and trespassing at Lazy B Stables on Coates Road.

UPDATED: USC Equestrian Team Member Hurt In Vermont
A member of the University of South Carolina equestrian team has been critically injured in an accident at a stable in Vermont. The school says junior Victoria Middleton was hit in the head with a rail over the weekend when the horse she was bathing got scared and broke the fencing in Bennington, Vt.

Man, Horse Killed In Collision On Athens Highway
A man and a horse have been killed in a collision on the Athens Highway near Gainesville. Georgia State Trooper Michael Talton said he had no idea why the bridled horse was loose. He said the animal wandered into the northbound lanes Thursday a short distance south of the Gaines Mill Road intersection.

Aiken Public Safety Mounted Patrol Tandem Retires
Two Aiken Department of Public Safety (ADPS) Officers are heading off to greener pastures…literally, for one of them. Kojak, the one on four legs, and Lieutenant Donald Butler have patroled together for years. Lt. Butler has been with ADPS for 33 years, and he got Kojak to sign up about 9 years ago. The two have been inseparable in their police work, and they did one final task together, as a team…they retired.
