Special Election May Be Held If State Senator Ed Tarver Becomes U.S. Attorney

A U.S. Senate committee may consider President Obama’s nomination of State Senator Ed Tarver to be the U.S. Attorney for eastern Georgia this week. If he’s confirmed, Governor Sonny Perdue would have to order a special election to fill Tarver’s seat at the State Capitol.

Storms, Rain Turn Deadly In Georgia, Areas Of The Southeast

Days of heavy rain have turned the weather deadly from Alabama through Georgia into eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Eight people have died in the rising tides, including one child. The hardest hit state may be Georgia, where Governor Sony Perdue has delared emergencies in 17 counties. ABC News’ T.J. Winick is in Austell, Georgia with more on the wicked weather.

Georgia’s chief water negotiator says he’s “guardedly optimistic” that Georgia and Alabama can reach a water deal by the end of the year. Georgia Power President Michael Garrett was chosen by Gov. Sonny Perdue to help broker a deal.

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue is meeting with the state’s congressional delegation to discuss a response to a federal court ruling that could restrict metro Atlanta from its main water supply.

GA Group To Look At Child Abuse At Schools

Gov. Sonny Perdue is starting a new panel to examine allegations of abuse at schools in the state. He wants the group to develop a way for parents and students to report abuse involving school employees so that every district has a uniform way to handle such cases. The group is made up of school district administrators from across the state, a district attorney and a parent representative.

Alabama Governor Warns Utility On Water Feud With Georgia

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley is warning utility giant Southern Co. to stay out of the region’s tri-state water war. In a letter to company CEO David Ratcliffe Wednesday, Riley said he was surprised to learn that the head of Southern subsidiary Georgia Power was leading a Georgia “impact team” formed by Gov. Sonny Perdue to work on the state’s strategy in the dispute, including lobbying Congress.

School Budget Cuts… Here We Go Again

It’s a tough decision for local educators as they deal with more state budget cuts. Georgia sales tax collections are down and the state is sending less money to public schools and universities. Augusta Richmond County Superintendent Doctor Dana Bedden says despite this new cut, he was able keep jobs and not lay anyone off. This time he was able to get $4.4 million from the reserves.
