FDA: Dieters Should Stop Hydroxycut Use Now

Government health officials warned dieters and body builders Friday to immediately stop using Hydroxycut, a widely sold supplement linked to cases of serious liver damage and at least one death. The Food and Drug Administration said the company that makes the dietary supplement has agreed to recall 14 Hydroxycut products. Available in grocery stores and pharmacies, Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. At least 9 million packages were sold last year, the FDA said.

An official said the agency will announce Wednesday it’s complying with a federal judge’s order. The official was not authorized to speak publicly before the agency’s announcement, so the information was provided on grounds of anonymity.

FDA Eyes NY Firm In Pistachio Recall Probe

Authorities looking into the nationwide pistachio recall say they’re investigating a California nut processor’s sister company in New York where officials last month found cockroaches and rodent droppings. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that Commack, N.Y.-based Setton International Foods Inc. shares key staff and packages food with Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., the second-largest pistachio processor in the nation.

FDA Warns Against Eating Pistachios

Federal food officials are warning people not to eat any food containing pistachios. That’s because of possible contamination by salmonella. The Food and Drug Administration says California-based Setton Pistachio, the nation’s second-largest pistachio processor, was voluntarily recalling more than 2 million pounds of its roasted nuts shipped since last fall.

GA House Adopts Food Safety Changes In Wake Of Salmonella Outbreak

The House unanimously adopted changes to the state’s food safety guidelines in the wake of a deadly salmonella outbreak to a Georgia plant. The chamber voted to allow county health officials to report possible violations of safety rules to state and federal agencies. State Rep. Terry England, R-Auburn, said it allows the state to deputize local inspectors to get “another set of eyes” on food plants across the state.

U.S. House Panel Likely To Pass Tobacco Regulation Wednesday

A House panel is expected to approve Wednesday sweeping tobacco regulation that would put the bill on pace for House passage far earlier in the congressional session than in the last Congress. The House Energy and Commerce Committee vote, expected Wednesday afternoon or evening, would give the Food and Drug Administration the power to police the tobacco industry.
