The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing Air Force pilot off the South Carolina coast Saturday at 10 p.m.

Crews searched more than 750 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean on Friday for an F-16 fighter pilot whose plane hit another fighter mid-air during night training exercises off the South Carolina coast. The two planes collided Thursday around 8:30 p.m. about 40 miles off Folly Beach, near Charleston, said Senior Master Sgt. Brad Fallin at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter. Both jets, based at Shaw, are single-seat aircraft. UPDATE: The missing pilot is identified as Air Force Capt. Nicholas Giglio of the 20th Fighter Wing, based at Shaw Air Force Base, near Sumter, SC. UPDATE: Debris has been found in the Atlantic Ocean during search for missing pilot.

There’s going to be more nighttime activity around a South Carolina Air Force base. Military officials say F-16 pilots based at Shaw Air Force base will be spending more time in the air at night this week to train with night vision equipment.

You might see some fighter jets flying across the sky in South Carolina, on Friday. The Air Force will scramble F-16’s in a special exercise. It’s designed to hone the military’s ability to defend against potential air threats.
