Augusta Family Y Breaks Ground On Katie’s Pool

Thursday, officials at the Family Y, on Wheeler Road, broke ground on a new pool. The pool is handicapped accessible and is named in honor of Katie York, a former aquatics instructor who died last year while battling viral encephalitis.

Groundbreaking Held For Katie’s Pool

A talented swimmer and Family Y volunteer will soon have a special-needs pool built and named in her memory. 20-year old Katie York died last May after falling ill with viral encephalitis, when she was 17. She had been a competitive swimmer, but after she got sick, she made it her mission to help others with disabilities swim and benefit from pool time.

Local Paralympian Returns To Augusta With Medals, World Record

From day one, Lantz Lamback never let cerebral palsy slow him down. Last month, in China, the Augustan won more medals…four…than any other U.S. male swimmer in the Paralympics. Lantz is back in the Garden City, working at the Family Y as an adapted aquatics instructor. As WJBF News Channel 6’s Chris Kane reports, Lamback’s life is finally getting back to normal.
