Aiken Man Honored As “Hero”, Over 50 Years Later

This Sunday, two people will be honored for their heroic actions, more than five decades ago. In 1953, a gas explosion forever changed the face of downtown Aiken. Ten people were killed, but some were saved, thanks to a few brave men. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has more.

Caught on tape…Police in northern Kentucky are reviewing a videotape that shows a vacant two-story house exploding and collapsing into a pile of debris. A surveillance camera at a nearby business captured the explosion, Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Imperial Sugar Restarts Savannah, GA Refinery

Imperial Sugar has restarted its Georgia refinery to resume making crystal sugar for the first time since a deadly 2008 explosion devastated the plant near Savannah. Employees fired up the boiler at the nation’s second-largest sugar refinery Tuesday morning and planned to start shipping liquid sugar by Thursday. The first truckloads of crystal sugar are to follow within the next 10 days.

Crews Recover 3 Bodies From NC Slim Jim Plant

Authorities say they have found a third body inside a Slim Jim factory in North Carolina a day after an explosion wrecked the building. Garner Police Sgt. Chris Clayton said crews found the remains of a missing worker Wednesday morning. He said teams were preparing to enter the facility through the roof as part of recovery efforts.

Traffic, Business Flowing Again At NYC Coffee Shop Blast Site

Traffic and business are back to normal on Manhattan’s Upper East Side after a small bomb blast. No one was injured in the explosion early Monday. It destroyed a sidewalk bench and shattered windows at a Starbucks near the Guggenheim museum. The coffee shop was open Tuesday morning, although the windows hadn’t yet been fixed.
