GA Measure Would Require Checks On More Workers
A Georgia Republican is pushing a measure that would require employers to perform background checks on staffers who work inside other people’s homes. The measure sponsored by state Rep. Allen Peake of Macon would also ban some criminals from jobs that would send them into homes.

Augusta Early Retirement Plan Suffers Setback
It’s been talked about for weeks, offering Augusta city workers incentives to retire early. The Augusta Human Resources Department says it could save $2 million a year in payroll, but there’s politics at play and a troubled economy, and it could add up to putting the early retirement plan to rest. The Savannah-Chatham County school district has settled a class-action lawsuit by employees who say they were not allowed to enroll in the state retirement system for educators.

Kennametal Announces Layoff Of All Its Columbia County Employees
WJBF News Channel 6 has received word of more layoffs in Columbia County. Kennametal has notified the Columbia County Commission that they are terminating all 153 employees at their plant, on Old Evans Road. The layoffs are effective August 30th.

It’s a pat on the back for Augusta’s city workers. For the first time, the city is looking to reward the workforce beyond a paycheck. What’s planned would be providing a $100 cash bonus for being named Employee of the Month, pins to recognize employees’ years of service, and a big dinner for workers when they retire.
