The federal government is lending a helping hand to some TV stations that have gotten lost in the digital shuffle.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is running a multi-million dollar deficit, but it was able to buy 1,200 converter boxes and some new antennas to make the conversion to digital televisions. The switch cost $80,000. WJBF News Channel 6’s SC Capitol reporter, Robert Kittle, has more.

The Big Switch…WJBF News Channel 6 joined hundreds of stations across the country, turning off the analog TV signal. We warned, pleaded and prodded owners of older TV’s to get digital-ready, but for some, there’s no reason to wait for the last minute, they waited even longer. George Eskola has more.

It’s been talked about for months…the switch over to digital TV. Some of the local stations in Augusta made the change overnight,  leaving owners of older TV’s who do not have cable or satellite service out in the cold, unless they have a converter box.  News Channel 6’s George Eskola was out and about checking on the supplies of converter boxes.

On February 17, WJBF-TV, in Augusta, Georgia, intends to cease analog broadcasting.

Congress has now decided to give people four more months to prepare for the upcoming transition from analog to digital TV broadcasting.

The House has defeated a bill to postpone the upcoming transition from analog to digital television broadcasting by four months to June 12.

Could the federal government delay the switch to digital television? Given a growing list of glitches with the transition, there’s momentum building to push back the transition date.

The government mandated switch from analog to digital cable is just over a month away.  Wednesday night, Augusta’s local TV stations teamed up with Comcast to make sure you’re ready.  WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more.
