About a million Maclaren USA strollers sold by Target and Babies “R” Us are being recalled after 12 reports of children having their fingertips amputated by a hinge mechanism.

Full-length women’s chenille robes made in Pakistan are being recalled by a Warren, Pa. company because they are highly flammable and now linked to nine deaths. Most of the deaths linked to the full-length chenille robes occurred when the victims were cooking. The victims were mostly in their 70s and 80s.

Former state superintendent of education Inez Tenenbaum on Tuesday made her first public appearance in South Carolina since becoming the head of the national Consumer Product Safety Commission. At Rosewood Elementary School in Columbia, she announced a back-to-school safety checklist for parents to go through to make sure their children are safe. Tenenbaum became head of the agency in June. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 1.5 million Durabrand DVD players after the company said it received five reports of the products overheating, leading to fires and property damage.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says about a million play yards are being recalled because of a falling hazard. The play yards are distributed by Kolcraft Enterprises of Chicago. They were manufactured in China, Spain and Italy and sold under the brand names Kolcraft, Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling about 400,000 “drop side” cribs from cribmaker Simplicity, because of the risk for suffocation or entrapment.

Before you head to the pool this holiday weekend, check your child’s float. The government has issued a voluntary recall of about 4 million inflatable baby floats due to a drowning hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says Macy’s will voluntarily recall about 33,000 hooded children’s sweatshirts that pose a strangulation risk.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Skywalker Holdings LLC announced a voluntary recall of 13-foot Square Trampolines. About 60,000 trampolines distributed by Skywalker Holdings LLC, of Brigham City, Utah are being recalled.

President Barack Obama has named former South Carolina state schools chief Inez Tenenbaum to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Obama also named Robert Adler, a former commission aide who teaches business ethics and product safety at UNC-Chapel Hill, to one of the panel’s seven-year seats.
