Ailing Senator Edward Kennedy Asks For Speedy Replacement Process

A cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has asked Massachusetts leaders to change state law to allow a speedy replacement of him in the Senate, fearing a months-long open seat will deny Democrats a crucial vote on President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. In a note to Gov. Deval Patrick and other state leaders, Kennedy wrote “it is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election.“

SC Veterans Center Opens New Hospice Unit

The Veterans Administration is opening a new 10-bed hospice unit at its center in Columbia. Officials at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center are having an open house Wedneday. They say the unit will be ready for patients within days.

Farrah Fawcett Remembered At LA Funeral

The life of “Charlie’s Angels” star Farrah Fawcett was celebrated at a private funeral in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday. Her longtime companion, Ryan O’Neal, was among pallbearers who accompanied the casket, covered in yellow and orange flowers, into the Roman Catholic cathedral Tuesday afternoon.
