Augusta Mayor Appears In “The Blind Side”

An Augusta native is playing the lead role in what is being called one of the top ten movies of the year. The Blind Side opens Friday night, starring Glenn Hills graduate, Quinton Aaron, as Michael Oher…a homeless teen adopted by a suburban family who earns a college scholarship and is now a rookie with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. Quinton played one year of football at Glenn Hills before graduating in ‘03, but he mostly sang in the choir and now he’s got his first major starring role alongside Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. And, Quinton is not the only familiar face you will see in the film…Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver plays an assistant coach to former South Carolina coach, Lou Holtz. He spent a day in June filming his big scene…Barclay Bishop talked to him about how and why he went Hollywood.

UPDATED: Babysitter Charged In Baby’s Death

A Columbia County babysitter is charged with killing the baby she was supposed to be watching. Lawanda Concettes Tripp, 39, has been arrested, charged with the murder of 22-month-old Tearia Michele Hall. It happened on Avery Landing Drive…just off Belair Road. WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop reports.

UPDATED: Rachael Ray Could Help Local Animal Rescue

It’s a local rescue group inspired by one dog, and has now saved hundreds of pets. But now, this Burke County group needs your help to win a national competition for their service, hosted by a very famous “foodie.” WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop has more. UPDATE: ‘Old Fella Animal Rescue did not win during Tuesday night’s round, but did receive $4,000…$1,000 for each round that they made. Congratulations!

You can’t ignore the numbers. On any given night across the country, 54,000 veterans are living on the streets. The number has gone down slightly in Georgia, but the problem still remains.
