It’s History In The Re-Making. Renovations are now underway on the last remaining piece of the old Confederate powderworks, the 150-foot tall chimney located on the Augusta Canal.

It will soon be weekends only on the Augusta Canal. A popular stretch of the canal path will be shut down, starting next week.

It’s a plan that could turn a neglected section of the Augusta Canal into the city’s next tourist attraction. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, a section of the canal could become a haven for canoeists and kayakers. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.

A body has been discovered in the Augusta Canal. Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigators were called out Wednesday morning to the Enterprise Mill, just off of the 15th Street bridge, near Greene Street. The body has been indentified as 50-year-old Herman Johnson.

In an e-mail to WJBF News Channel 6 Comcast of Augusta announces that they have given $12,620 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Last year, volunteers polished a jewel, removing tons of trash from Aqueduct Park. With summer here, more and more people are using the site, off the Augusta Canal to cool off, but more people bring more problems with the city searching for a way to handle them. Hopefully, the weather will cooporate for this weekend’s big community Augusta Canal clean-up…The event is taking place Saturday morning…the meeting point is Sacred Heart Cultural Center, at 8:00 a.m. The event is sponsored by the group, “Growing Augusta the Green Way.“

Augusta’s Salvation is in line to receive $68 million for a Kroc Center if $20 million can be raised locally. The fund raising campaign is underway and officials are more than halfway to their goal. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has the story.

The water is filling its banks, so things are springing back to life on the Augusta Canal. With the historic waterway being refilled the canal’s tour boats are being taken out of dry dock and are back in the water. Tuesday, the body of an Augusta homeless man was found beneath a bridge over the Augusta Canal, near downtown. He had been killed by a blow to the head, and it was considered a murder. For those living on the streets, life is already tough. Now, they face the murder of a person who shares their plight. WJBF News Channel 6’s George Eskola has more.
