The Atlanta Braves say Bobby Cox will retire as manager after the 2010 season.  The team says Cox agreed to a one-year contract extension for 2010, then will start a five-year consulting agreement to advise the team in baseball operations.

John Smoltz has been released by the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander signed with the Red Sox last January after two decades with Atlanta, hoping he could recover from shoulder surgery. But he struggled. And after eight starts with the Red Sox, Smoltz was 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox have cut struggling pitcher John Smoltz. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein delivered the news to Smoltz on Friday. The 42-year-old righty was designated for assignment, meaning Boston has 10 days to trade or release him.

Adam LaRoche is headed back to the Atlanta Braves, and Casey Kotchman is returning to the American League. In an exchange of first basemen, the Braves sent LaRoche to the Boston Red Sox for Kotchman and cash before Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline to make trades without waivers.

Some big names in Atlanta Braves history are returning to help the team honor Greg Maddux. The Braves will induct Maddux into the team’s Hall of Fame and retire his No. 31 on Friday.
