COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina lawmakers are considering separate bills that would make it illegal to smoke in a car with a child, but allow handguns to be stowed under the seat.

A Senate committee was debating a bill Wednesday preventing smokers from lighting up in cars with passengers ages 10 or younger. The misdemeanor could bring a $100 fine.

Meanwhile, a House panel will discuss letting drivers keep their handguns under their seat. State law already allows them to be in the glove compartment, console or trunk.
