Richmond County taxpayers will foot $75,000 bill for December 2nd runoff.
(Augusta) - As election workers wrap up paperwork from Tuesday’s election, they are getting ready for another one.
There will be a runoff in several state races in Georgia and it will cost taxpayers in Richmond county $75,000 to open the polls again.
Augusta Commissioners have been put on notice that the board of elections will need the money to pay poll workers, order ballots, and other related costs.
While some voters are unaware of a runoff, others are ready to cast their ballot.
Stanley Stephens: “No, I don’t have voter fatigue. I would definitely be voting for Martin. As for the other candidates, I really don’t know too much about them.”
Voters still have to decide the Georgia Court of Appeals race, the District 4 Public Service Commission seat, and possibly the U.S. Senate race between Republican Saxby Chambliss and his Democratic challenger, Jim Martin.
All 52 polling places will be open.
Even if the Senate race is on the ballot, Elections Director Lynn Bailey, still expects an extremely light turnout.
Bailey: “Anytime you have just been through a major election that generated as much interest as this one generated where voters were completely involved; they were energized and they had been thinking about this election for months they get tired. They get tired of voting.”
