COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)—South Carolina lawmakers are considering whether voters should be allowed to cast early ballots in a three-day window before an election. Critics say fewer people will vote.
Legislators on the House Judiciary Committee were debating Tuesday whether to advance the bill.
Democratic Rep. Bakari Sellers of Denmark argued limiting early voting to the Thursday through Saturday before an election is restrictive.
South Carolina now allows people to cast absentee ballots in person at election offices or by mail within a month before elections. But voters must give an excuse for why they’re unavailable on Election Day.
The amended bill would allow voting in person without excuse, but only during those three days. Absentee voting by mail would not change.
