COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - About 40,000 people in northwestern South Carolina are still without electric power as workers scramble to restore service after the winter storm that dumped up to 10 inches of snow on the state.
Duke Energy says 4,600 crew members are working around the clock to restore power. A spokeswoman says 1,000 of those workers came in from the Midwest and nearby states to deal with the problems.
Hardest hit are residents of Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
A National Weather Service winter weather advisory issued early this morning for a dozen counties because of the risk of black ice on roadways expired as temperatures rose.
Duke Energy says it could be Wednesday night before all service is restored.
