University Of SC Gets $5 Million To Study Climate Change

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina is getting nearly $5 million in federal funds to study possible ways to curb climate change.

The school said Tuesday it would use a U.S. Energy Department grant to study if carbon dioxide can be stored underground in places like aquifers and old oil reserves to keep the greenhouse gas from affecting global warming.

The school says the award is part of about $75 million awarded nationally by the Energy Department’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Officials say South Carolina’s grant will focus on deep saline aquifers in Beaufort, Colleton and Jasper counties. Contributions from the university, the state Geological Survey and the University of Illinois put total funding for the project at about $6 million.
