North Augusta, SC—“It could get messy,” that’s what project engineers are saying, but the goal is to make things easier for drivers in the end. So if we can put up with some traffic congestion and lane shifts and occasionally people trying to squeeze in at the last moment—in about a year, getting onto I-20 should be a lot easier.
“We hate the traffic! Yeah, it’s pretty bad.“
This is becoming a common sight in the c-s-r-a, whether it’s I-20 or Bobby Jones, construction seems to surround and often frustrate drivers.
“It’s terrible, there’s construction everywhere.“
And there’s about to be more, as the massive ‘Palmetto Parkway Project’ continues. The next step here is to work on highway 25 in North Augusta.
Claude Ipock, South Carolina Department of Transportation Project Engineer: “We’re making Highway 25 through the I-20 section six and eight lanes. They’ll be an eight lane section to help cars getting onto I-20.“
The work on the one-and-a-half mile stretch that runs over I-20 will take about a year, but once it is done engineers and drivers agree it will help.
“It’ll be nice when they’re through, it will save a lot of time.“
“It’s progress!”
Yes, workers say, be prepared to tangle with traffic…
“I had to drive all the way and turn around just to get back up here.“
“We came over here and it was hard getting here and it’s hard getting back.“
Meanwhile, there’s one point being driven home:
Ipock: “Be patient, it will be a nice product when it’s finished but in the meantime, there will be some headache.“
Along with widening the road, the bridge that runs over i-20 is going to be replaced. Work on that has already begun. The official completion date for this phase of the project is December 31 of next year.
