Augusta, GA—A Georgia woman who lost her child to sudden cardiac death, years ago, has become an activist. Sherri Parman believes an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) would have saved her son’s life. Check out Nader Parman’s story at NaderParman.org.
Parman says defibrillation, within three to five minutes of cardiac arrest, raises the survival rate from less than 5% to more than 70%.
Sherri Parman: “A child can collapse for many reasons, but sudden cardiac arrest is the most time-sensitive. So, if the child collapses, and people around the child are trained in CPR, and there’s an AED within a fast one-minute walk, you greatly increase their chance of survival. So, we need them definitely everywhere children play.“
Aiken County high schools have defibrillators on campus. The Aiken County School Board requires someone in each elementary and middle school be certified in CPR. But, those schools do not have defibrillators.
Richmond County middle and high schools have defibrillators, and they’ve put in for grant money that would be used to buy AEDs for all elementary schools.
Every Columbia County school has a defibrillator, along with government buildings, and plenty of local businesses.

It’s sad when a life is lost that could have easily been saved if there had been an AED nearby. For the victim of a sudden cardiac arrest to survive it is important to administer CPR and defibrillation within 4 minutes of the collapse. Every minute that goes by without first aid reduces the survival rate by 7-10%. These odds make quick access to an AED very important. Read more about the importance of having AEDs in this article,
