“So They Would Not Be Buried Alone”

Aiken, SC—Friday morning, a small crowd gathered to add five more names to Calvary Cemetery.

Tim Carlton, Aiken County Coroner: “These are people who survived their relatives, or their families don’t have the proper means to have a proper burial for them…and so, we’ve taken on that task in the coroner’s office.“

Some of them are complete strangers to this community and these people….like Flora Coffield.

Carlton: “Don’t know much about her. I know she outlived most of her relatives…She has a sister in Florida that I talked to yesterday as a matter of fact who is in her late 70’s and was just not able to travel, not able to provide any financial support for her sister so she passed it on to the Coroner’s Office, and we’re proud to take on that challenge.“

Mary Lindsey, Oscar Mancio, and Kelly Romans…are three others.

And then there’s the story of Dale Sengelman.

Ben Williams, North, SC: “I met Dale in Orangeburg, about a year and a half ago, he was walking down the street. He was poor, semi-homeless.“

Ben Williams drove all the way from Orangeburg to be here….he says it’s because the man he gave rides to, back and forth to a soup kitchen, helped him, just as much.

Williams: “He preached the gospel and he showed me a lot of things that I wasn’t….um, I didn’t realize until I met him. It really was an eye-opener.“

The service was about remembering…

Cheri Hicks, Regency Hospice: “I just think it’s a privilege and an honor to be part of it.“

And about teaching the up-and-coming Aiken County residents, what this community is about.

Peggy Wertz, Principal, St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic School: “Their religion teacher talked to them about what the community does and how they did actually seek out information about these people, so it gave them a good opportunity to see works of mercy and service and it was a living example of that.“

And it makes you think…you’ll never know whose life you’ll touch.

Williams: “Well, it was my friend. I just came to pay my respects.“
