COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Veterans Administration is opening a new 10-bed hospice unit at its center in Columbia.

Officials at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center are having an open house Wedneday. They say the unit will be ready for patients within days.

The unit has medical and professional staff trained to deal with end-of-life issues, particularly for veterans who suffered injuries or trauma while serving in the military.

The new unit has space for family members to be with their loved ones. It also allows families and friends to bring small items or memorabilia that will comfort the veterans.
