COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Buckle up, South Carolina.

That’s the theme of a campaign kicking off Friday from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Office of Highway Safety.

Organizers hope an event at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia will draw attention to the need for wearing seat belts.

A law that went into effect in December 2005 requires all drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt.

Friday’s event is in conjunction with a national “Click It or Ticket” campaign that runs through the end of the month.

So far this year, 301 drivers, passengers and pedestrians have been killed in car accidents in South Carolina. Of those, 238 passengers and drivers were not wearing seat belts.
