COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s school children have a few more weeks of summer left, but the law officers who keep them safe are going back to class.

School resource officers for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department have been meeting for the past two weeks to learn new techniques to keep kids from joining gangs.

The training is called GREAT, which stands for Gang Resistance Education and Training. Officers from Fort Jackson, Columbia, North Carolina and Georgia are also taking part.

The course wraps up Friday. After that, the officers will go back to their schools and conduct 10-week courses for elementary and middle school students.
