COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol stopped South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s for speeding this week, but the trooper let the governor’s protective detail driver go without a ticket.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Mark Keel Wednesday confirmed the traffic stop, saying that a trooper did not ticket a State Law Enforcement Agent driving Sanford after a traffic stop on Interstate 385. Keel said the SLED agent now will get a ticket.

Sanford had spent much of the day in South Carolina’s Upstate, first at an economic development announcement in Gaffney and later giving a speech in Easley.

Sanford has been dealing with a criminal ethics investigation of his travel practices in the wake of revelation of an affair with an Argentine woman in June.

Keel’s press release is below:

“I have reviewed the video recording of the traffic stop that occurred at approximately 3:30 PM, October 6, 2009 on Interstate 385.

The details are as seen on the tape: Lance Cpl. R. S. Salter of Troop 2 clocked a speeding vehicle; a dark colored Crown Victoria with tinted windows, and proceeded to make the traffic stop near the two-mile marker.

An individual, who exited the Crown Victoria and approached Salter, indentified himself as a State Law Enforcement Division agent. When asked why he was speeding, the agent said he was transporting the Governor.

Trooper Salter approached the Crown Victoria and found the Governor to be a passenger in the vehicle.

Trooper Salter then returned to his vehicle without issuing the SLED agent a speeding citation.“
