COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina is getting a nearly $5 million grant to set up an Internet network to notify seriously ill people about clinical trials.

The State reported Tuesday that USC’s Center for Healthcare Quality will operate the network which will allow sick people to volunteer for clinical trials and get notification of new research related to their condition.

The network will have built-in security checks to protect patient privacy.

The grant will be paid over two years and is expected to operate at no cost to patients.

USC will work with the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and Clemson University on various aspects of the research network.

USC professor Jay Moskowitz says clinical trials are often the last hope for seriously ill patients.
