PINOPOLIS, S.C. (AP) - State-owned utility Santee Cooper is expected to drop plans for a controversial coal-fired power plant in South Carolina.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Monday that the utility’s board is expected to ratify a committee’s earlier vote to suspend efforts to secure permits for the Florence County plant.
The newspaper reports the committee had voted to allow electric cooperatives to buy power from another utility, reducing the need for the plant.
Board chairman O.L. Thompson says the action makes it unlikely the plant will be built.
Santee Cooper decided three years ago to build a $1.25 billion generator. Environmental groups have called the proposed plant too expensive and unnecessary.
