North Augusta, SC—It is almost finished: the Palmetto Parkway project has come miles in the last few months…and crews tell us, they expect to beat their December 31st deadline to open the parkway.

All that’s left to do on the new span of I-520 is a little painting, a few guardrails, and a little paving. Highway 25 work is still underway…that area is going from four to six lanes.

Crews say they credit the weather for the project’s smooth run.

Claude Ipock, SCDOT project engineer: “There was nearly 5 million cubic yards of earth that had to be moved for the project, and in order to get to the point where you can put down asphalt and build bridges, you’ve got to move the earth first, so weather cooperated when we needed it to.“

There will be a few more road closures in the next month, while crews paint bridges, but we’re told that work will be done at night, to avoid traffic congestion.
