Officials Discussing Plans For SRS

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (AP) - Officials are publicly discussing their plans for a former bomb-making complex along South Carolina’s western border.

The U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health and Environmental Control are holding a public workshop on Tuesday in North Augusta to discuss plans for shuttered nuclear reactors at the Savannah River Site.

Officials are planning to use $1.6 billion in federal stimulus money to fund 3,000 jobs cleaning up and sealing off the old reactors. The new employees will be hired by the end of this summer. Thousands of jobseekers have attended job fairs throughout the state.
