COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A faulty breaker has prompted officials at a South Carolina nuclear plant to take the reactor offline.
The State reported that South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. said Monday it had taken the reactor offline at its plant in Jenkinsville northwest of Columbia.
SCE&G spokesman Eric Boomhower says the problem did not affect nuclear operations of the V.C. Summer plant.
Boomhower says taking the plant offline doesn’t affect the utility’s 652,000 customers.
He says the breaker helps transfer power to other equipment that connects the plant to the power grid. Boomhower says it’s unclear when the plant will resume operators.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Roger Hannah says there is no danger to the public.
SCE&G operates the plant with Santee Cooper, the state-owned utility.
