North Augusta, SC—A 14-year-old student at North Augusta Middle School collapsed during a physical education class, and later died, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Carlton identifies the student as 14-year-old James C. Fox, and says Fox collapsed near his teacher after completing a 200-yard slow run, shortly before 11:00 a.m., Monday morning.
The teacher performed CPR, and Fox was taken to MCG where he died a short time later.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, in Newberry, South Carolina.
According to Tammie Newman, the spokesperson for Aiken County Public Schools, released a statement from Superintendent of Aiken County Public Schools, Dr. Elizabeth Everitt, who says she is saddened to announce the death of a fourteen-year-old student at North Augusta Middle School, Monday morning.
The student, who had no known or indicated health impairments, collapsed during a routine physical education jogging exercise on the outdoor track with classmates. Immediate efforts were made to resuscitate the student by both the instructor and the school nurse. The student was pronounced dead, a short time later, at a local hospital.
Dr. Everitt is joined by the Administrative Area 2 Administration in extending her deepest sympathies to the student’s family, as well as his classmates and the faculty and staff at North Augusta Middle School.
