UPDATED: Escaped SC Inmate Captured In North Carolina
The S.C. Department of Corrections is searching for an inmate who walked away from the minimum security Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston, on Monday. Vernon Edward Gardner, 42, was discovered missing from the institution about 12:30 p.m.

Escaped inmate Vernon Gardner surrendered at about 5 p.m. Tuesday to S.C. Department of Corrections investigators in Lumberton, N.C.
Gardner, who walked away from Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston Monday, is being transported to Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., a maximum-security prison. Gardner faces felony escape, a charge that carries up 15 years in prison.

COLUMBIA (Nov. 2, 2009) – According to Josh Gelinas, the S.C. Department of Corrections is searching for an inmate who walked away from the minimum security Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston, on Monday.
Vernon Edward Gardner, 42, was discovered missing from the institution about 12:30 p.m.
Gardner is a white male; stands 5 feet 10 inches tall; weighs about 185 pounds; has blue eyes; and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a tan prison-issued jumpsuit.
Anyone with information is asked to call Corrections’ Fugitive Apprehension Unit at (877) 349-2130. After 5 p.m., call (803) 896-2258, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division at (803) 737-9000, or local law enforcement.
Gardner started serving a 7 year 6 month sentence in August 2009 for violating the state’s vehicle chop shop law. He was convicted in Lexington County.
