Greenwood, SC Man Dies At MCG After Aiken County Crash

According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, a Greenwood, SC man died Sunday evening after a crash on I-20. Justin Ryan Heinz, 28, of Greenwood, was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia Sunday night around 9:27 p.m.

Aiken County, SC—According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, a Greenwood, SC man died Sunday evening after a crash on I-20.

Justin Ryan Heinz, 28, of Greenwood, was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia Sunday night around 9:27 p.m.

Heinz died in surgery after being involved in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 20 near the 17 mile marker. The crash occurred at 6:49 p.m. Heinz was traveling westbound when he entered the median, overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn and ejecting him. Heinz’s passenger was not ejected and was also taken to MCG with non-life-threatening injuries. Heinz was driving a late model GMC SUV. The two were traveling to Mobile, Alabama where they work as pipe fitters for Thompson Construction.

Heinz died from multiple body trauma. The vehicle caught fire after the crash, however, the fire did not contribute to Heinz’s death or his passenger’s injuries. This crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. Toxicology on Heinz is pending.

This is the 29th fatal crash in Aiken County in 2009.
