A South Carolina priest now says he was “too hasty” in his remarks about President-Elect Barack Obama. Last week, Father Jay Scott Newman warned his parishoners not to take Communion if they voted for Obama. The priest believes Obama’s position on abortion is unacceptable to Catholics. Sunday saw protestors at his church in Greenville. CNN’s Kristen Natasia has more.

Greenville, SC—Jack Canfield, parishoner: “The Catholic Church has always been pro-life. I think it’s ridiculous to ask parishoners who voted for Obama to repent. I think people have the right to protest. It’s very American…“
And the picket line formed, more than 50-people strong…outside a place where they’re supposed to come together…
Protestor: “I think it’s a very controversial issue…“
Dividing even those with the same faith…
Supporter: “Sometimes, the questions gets a little muddled, but pro-life is pro-life, abortion is murder. It’s a very simple issue. The issue of abortion is something that should be left to the individual.“
It’s the first mass since Father Jay Scott Newman’s writing in the bulletin…asking church members who voted for Obama to repent before receiving Communion…since he’s a pro-choice candidate…and when we spoke with the pastor…he knew controversy was coming:
Father Jay Scott Newman, Pastor, St. Mary’s Catholic Church: “Very few people don’t have an opinion on this subject and it evokes the deepest of human emotions.“
The kind of emotion putting man, woman…child…out with signs…and very clear sides.
And, when the church processional passed the picket lines, the outspoken priest was silent. This time, his followers did the talking:
Richard Leboeuf, parishoner: “Father Newman is receiving criticism that is unwaranted. We still support our President, he is our 44th President and he is the leader of our country and the Americans will support him. We will agree to disagree on his stance on pro-choice.“

Terry, lets notimagine that McCain was as bad as Obama with regard to respect for life. It is morally licit for Catholics to vote for the lesser of the two evils and for the party who is more apt to lean toward protection of the sanctity of life. Therefore it was not a mortal sin to vote for MCCain. Fr. Jay was right in his plan to withold communion from those who voted for a blatantly pro abortion candidate without confession. And yes, there is forgiveness for those who have had abortions but that comes with true repentance as well.
Terry: I’m glad you understand the embryonic stem cell research problem and I agree with all your points.
My point is simply: why did Father Newman not condemn McCain voters as well since McCain supports this abhorrent practice?
This was not a case of trying to put limits on abortion (which is morally acceptable according to Pope John Paul II in Evangelium Vitae #73). Instead, this is a case of McCain voting to widen access to embryos for study and destruction, using our tax dollars. Bush, you may recall, limited research to existing stem cell lines. McCain voted to overturn those limitations.
If Father Newman had followed his premise to its logical conclusion, he would have condemned anyone who voted for McCain or Obama.
Those who have abortions ARE counseled and not condemned. As far as war, the Church condemns unjust war, but is in no position to stop one. The Church encourages and prays for war to cease and peace to prevail. The Church understands the need to defend our nation. The conflict we seem to be having is understanding if this is a just war and a defense of our nation. As far as child molestation, the Church is both far behind where it should be, long overdue for correction in that area yet it has now taken great strides to prevent this from happening anymore. One way is through VIRTUS training, and yet other religious and secular organizations have yet to uncover and address the same problems. The Catholic Church is not the only entity that has had child-molesters hiding under the cloak of authority. Schools, boy and girl scout troops, and other churches are not immune. Parents and caregivers must be vigilant and aware of warning signs, then know what steps to take to protect and/or help children from child-molesters.
In response to concerns that stem cell research on embryos is just as bad as abortion, that is why the Catholic Church has clearly stated that it also condemns that practice. I’m surprised that anyone would think for a moment otherwise. And with advances in that field it is no longer necessary to use embryos for that purpose anyway. I am surprised at how little the general public knows about Catholic Doctrine, which to me, simply follows from common sense.
Fr. Newman is the spiritual father of St. Mary’s. He was correct to instruct his parishioners in the way of truth. As spiritual father his primary mission is the salvation of souls. Explaining Catholic Doctrine is his responsibility. Receiving the Holy Eucharist in the state of mortal sin is not compatable with the nature of the sacrament. Mortal sin is a grave matter which by its’ nature separates us from the body of Christ; requiring repentance. Willful participation in an intrinsically evil act by promoting that act is placing our souls in mortal danger. Since 1973 about fifty million Americans have been killed by abortion. This intrinically evil culture towers over the evil acts of the Hitler Reign where six million were destroyed and the USSR where ten million were destroyed. Obama has pledged to Planned Parenthood that he will stand up for the continued destruction of American babies. This is a real horror story. Why are innocent babies being punished for the errant ways of their parents? This insensitive culture is rotting the American fabric. Our forfathers fostered compassion for those in need. There are many associations “on the ground” including Catholic organizations who help pregnant women carry their children to term. Supporting these organizations by volunteering or with financial aid is the action we need. Saying that the Catholic Church should “do something” is an excuse for not getting involved. After all, we are the body of Christ.
Abortion is destructive to men, women and children. Fifty million Americans killed - how does that compare to the wars of the past? War on the Unborn is by far the most heinous war ever fought. These children have nothing to defend themselves; fifty million - never given a chance; this is the land of the free? Fifty million had no freedom. How many more will be denied? The question are, “What is my responsibility as an American citizen?“ - “How am I going to help defenseless Americans?“
As an informative note: Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood had as one of her pillars the annialation of the black race. She was a collaborator with Hitler on population manipulation. Studying her adgenda is an eye opener. Also, adult stem cells have cured people; embryonic stem cells have cured zero; in fact embryonic stem cells produce tumors.
“Those that have eyes to see… and ears to hear” resonates right now - Father was not to hasty - its just that so many are going to be to late - many have said they would stand for their faith when the time comes - but yet they still do not - MR OBAMA is not simply Pro-Choice - he IS PRO-ABORTION - he has made PROMISES TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD! - he has PROMISED to put blood on Americans’ hands - and to require it by law - those that have voted for him - now will have blood on their hands - the tragic and bloody consequences of his actions - will be also the consequences of theirs - they really need to go to confession. For their own soul’s sake.
Yes, Fr Newman is to be commended for his brave stance for the faith. The people are crying out for the truth and thank God there is a new strain of priests who are going to give it to them. This sort of straight talk is long overdue. May God bless him for his courage, and may God forgive whoever has silenced him.
I am so very disappointed and angry at the same time that Father Newman “was too hasty in speaking.“ I don’t think he was hasty at all. One must speak up at all times about receiving Holy Communion in the state or mortal sin (which if you voted for the Obama you are in mortal sin. Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is not a RIGHT, it is a PRIVILEGE and a privilege only given to someone in the state of grace. These people who are receiving Jesus in mortal sin are only harming themselves; they commit a sacrilege, and as St. Paul says, they only receive condemnation and actually receive “poison.“ So Fr. Newman is only helping a soul when he says don’t present yourself for Holy Communion. He’s saving souls, not condemning them. Every Good Catholic has the right to ask Biden, Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy (all these morally evil people) not to receive Jesus. They are committing such scandal. Poor Jesus. He has so many betrayers, so many Judases. Remember one thing, when people want/vote for evil, God gives them what they want. His justice is not far behind. I would say finally, that anyone who reads this…pray, pray, pray. Justice is hard to take.
I am very, very disappointed to hear Father Jay say he was too hasty. I was so happy that to see a priest courageously standing up for truth and acting like a John the Baptist encouraging people to repent.
Catholics no longer understand the gravity of their actions supporting a leader that advocates against human life. The reason for this is the clergy have not been telling them so. As St. Paul put it clearly, “The wages of sin is death”. The Gospel never changes even though human beings make up their own concept of right and wrong. Heaven help America, when you wage war against human life you wage war against yourselves and you will be the cause of your own destruction.
Both McCain and Obama voted for the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 which would have allowed federal funding to be used for research on stem cell lines obtained from discarded human embryos originally created for fertility treatments.
The bill was rightly condemned by the Catholic Church and vetoed by Bush. One can presume that both McCain and Obama will not veto the bill when it is brought up again.
So do virtually all of Father Newman’s parishioners have to repent for supporting anti-life candidates? Stem cell research on “excess” embryo’s is just as bad as abortion.
