it was a chance to remember someone special…and support a special event. Lieutenant Michael Frank was the face of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. Last November, he was killed in a car accident. Monday, a group of people got together to celebrate his life, while continuing his support for a local organization. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe reports.

North Augusta, SC—Every year, there are dozens of charity golf tournaments…good causes to play for. But this one, for this group, hits close to home.
Ron Bielewicz, Michael Frank Golf Classic tournament chairman: “We are celebrating the life of Michael Frank, who was a public servant in the community.”
Tip Frank, Michael Frank’s son: “We’re just hoping that, not only is today a celebration of his life, but also going to help a lot of people while we’re doing this.“
The day is to honor Lt. Michael Frank, who was, for years, the face of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, and to carry on his tradition of support for the Special Olympics.
Captain Charles Barranco, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office: “It’s something that was important to our agency, his family, and to be a part of this is an honor.“
Bielewicz: “Michael volunteered for Special Olympics, Area 15, in particular, Aiken, Edgefield, Saluda counties, and we engaged the family very early on in this tournament, and wanted their input.“
Tip Frank: “He was always involved with it. He loved sports and being in shape, and I think anything that could help kids, go out and play sports and get in shape, he’d love that…We always shared golf as a common interest, and sometimes we were good, sometimes we weren’t so good. We’re very competitive people.“
There are little signs of Lt. Frank throughout the tournament…like hitting one hole with a hockey stick. He played and officiated hockey games throughout his life.
Tip Frank: “He did do a lot for the community, it’s nice that the community would give back to him, and celebrate his life.“
Bielewicz: “This is not a day to mourn Michael’s passing, but it’s a day to celebrate his life, and his spirit.“
Tip Frank: “We’re just all coming out to have a good time, and I think he’s smiling down right now.“
This was the first memorial tournament, which was held at the River North Golf Club, in North Augusta. Organizers say they hope to bring it back each year, bigger and better than the last.
